Confessions of an RSS Virgin

This is the first time I've ever done anything using RSS feed. I've never understood how to use it or what it does before, but now, I subscribed to several dozen blogs in the past hour or so on my Google Reader accuont. Since I'm so new to the concept (I don't blog often), I can't really say for sure whether RSS feeds here to stay or not. However, It seems to me like it's an efficient, effective way to organize if you're following a lot of different blots. I think it's going to stay around. I see no reason why it would vanish or wither on the proverbial vine. Here are some of the features that I like, and some of the reasons why I think it's here to stay:

  • The searchable bar at the top of Google Reader is very useful, and helped me find the topics that I wanted to read about at that particular moment. I first used it to search for blogs to subscribe to, and got a handy (and slightly condescending) popup that said "Are you sure you want to be using this feature for that?" I wasn't sure, but it all worked out for the best, since GR provided me with a link to exactly that.
  • I can pick which blog to look at on the side of the screen. I liked this. There are times when I don't want to read a web comic blog, but instead get tips on how to get published. I was afraid that it would be nothing more than a list my blogs or, even worse, just the posts from all my blogs thrown together with the most recent on the top.
  • It cut down a great deal on my favorites list. I had a bunch of blogs in there that I was reading on a weekly or semi-weekly basis, and with Google Reader, I simply added them all to my feed and read them that way.
This is pretty cool. I'm not going to lie. I'm sure the honeymoon period will be over soon, but it isn't yet. We'll see how I feel after NaNoWriMo.
